REVIEW – LUCK BY CHANCE
Here comes another movie this week on India’s another favourite passion i.e, BOLLYWOOD, in competition with VICTORY based on other Passion CRICKET.

LUCK BY CHANCE is directed by Debutante JOYA AKHTAR, daughter of legendry Javed Akhtar and sister of ROCK ON star Farhan Akhtar. The film showcases the ins & outs of our Indian Film Industry (Bollywood), how it works, it pluses, it’s minuses, strugglers, backstage scenes and intricacies, manipulations, exploitations etc. etc.

LUCK BY CHANCE is all about the story of Vikram (Farhan Akhtar), who hails from Delhi and shifts to Mumbai with dream of making it big in Bollywood. On way to his path of struggle, he comes across Sona (Konkona Sen Sharma), who also lands in Mumbai to become a star in film industry. Gradually they both fall in love.

Now enters is Rolly (Rishi Kapoor), a superstitious producer, who gets in trouble when Super Star Zaffer Khan (Hrithik Roshan) drives him mad by opting out of his dream film, in which he is launching Niki (Isha Sharwani), daughter of yesteryear superstar Neena (Dimple Kapadia).
As luck would be, Rolly decides to cast a newcomer and the role falls in the lap of Vikram. During his shooting stint, both Vikram and Niki gets attracted towards each other, thus drawing him away from Sona. Finally what Vikram gets – Sona, Niki or Stardom, for this you better go and watch the film on Big Screen.

Now coming on to the performances, Konkona Sen Sharma, as usual is brilliant and natural. Farhan as really evolved after ROCK ON and here also, he carries on his good work ahead with a superb performance. Hrithik Roshan as Superstar is unbelievable. Rishi Kapoor once again shows sparks of his talent, followed by Dimple Kapadia. Shah Rukh Khan in a small role leaves an impact.

Zoya Akhtar has done a wonderful job as a Director and as well as writer with some interesting sequences, though the script is bit predictable, but she still manages to show her talent and has fully utilized his filmy background to the fullest. Dialogues by Javed Akhtar are worth mentioning. Though music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy trio is not up to the mark, he delivers another mediocre piece after Chandni Chowk To China.

Overall, LUCK BY CHANCE is a good film, high above average, but I doubt it will make big on Box Office, it’s a film for film lovers, with some good performances.

VICTORY REVIEW

REVIEW - VICTORY
In India, game of Cricket is a passion, obsession & to some extent religion, besides FILMS. Every 2nd person either wants to be in Indian team or in Film world. Even my young son of 12 years is a big fan of cricket and he dreams to be in Indian Cricket Team.

VICTORY is one such film based on the story of a middle class family hailing from Jaisalmer, headed by father Ram (Anupam Kher), who dreams of his son Vijay Shekhawat (Harman S Baweja) representing the Indian Cricket Team. Their hard work and dedication pays off and Vijay becomes the Indian team batting sensation.

But there is a twist to the tale, as Vijay is unable to digest superstardom and falls to the glamour, money and advertisement world, so much so that his attention gets diverted from Cricket, as a result his form dips miserably thereby leading to his ouster from Indian Cricket Eleven. This leads to displeasure among his fans, but the turning moment comes when his father suffers a paralytic stroke.
This tragedy opens Vijay’s eyes and he determines to redeem his honour and once again makes a comeback in the team and gets tom play against Australia in the Champion’s Trophy Finals. And as predicted, plays a key role in winning the Finals for India, his father and his fans. In between there are some twists and turns, when Vijay is injured in between and gets hospitalized. And when India are on the verge of losing, our Hero returns to bat, inspite of his injury and pulls of an incredible VICTORY.

The problem with the film is it’s loose and predictable Story and Screenplay, which matches no way to the earlier legendry films based on Cricket - LAGAAN and IQBAL.

First half is bit dull, but 2nd half and Climax make up for the poor 1st half.

Ajitpal Mangat makes a promising debut as Director, but the script lets him down.

However some excitement and eagerness will be there in the form of bunch of true life Cricketers’ presence as – Brett Lee, Stuart Clarke, Mike Hussey, Brad Haddin, Brad Hogg, Simon Katich, Allan Border, Dean Jones, Muralitharan, Jayasuriya, Vaas, Maharoof, Fernando, Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Graeme Smith, Morkel Brothers, Andre Nel, Harbhajan Singh, Yousuf Pathan, Praveen Kumar, R.P. Singh, Ashish Nehra, Ramesh Pawar, Dinesh Karthick etc.

As regards to performance, veteran Anupam Kher as expected once again excels as a father. Surprisingly Harman S. Baweja impresses, he really has worked hard and looks like a cricketer, his body language, confidence, expressions seem perfect and he seems to be a right choice to play the lead role. One can’t fail to draw similarities between Indian Cricketer Yuvraj Singh and his character in the film.
Gulshan Grover ovceracts. Amrita Rao has nothing much to do but does justice to the role of a simple middle class girl.

Music bu Anu Malik is so so, Songs like – Money Money and Balla Utha look good in the film. However Cinematography by Vikas Shivraman is just superb and worth praising.

Overall, VICTORY is a an average film and can be seen once for time pass.

Remember the old long cold war going on between Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor, which happened in 2006 as a result of differences between Sallu and Shahid Kapoor (the then boyfriend of Kareena) during a Rock Star Concert.

Well the latest is that both the stars Sallu and Bebo have decided to bury the hatchet and solved their differences during the shooting of their film “MAIN AUR MRS. KHANNA” in Panchgani, a hill station near Mahabaleshwar, last week.

Both Stars were seen sharing Jokes and having a blast, to the delight of their colleagues and their fans.

According to Director Prem Soni, it was Kareena who took the first step towards breaking the ice. A crucial scene of this film required a serious discussion, earlier Prem Soni used to discuss the scenes separately with the two stars, but at this instance, during the Panchgani shoot, Kareena went ahead and discussed in details about that particular scene with Salman Khan. To ease the situation, Saif Ali Khan’s presence was more than enough, who though is not the part of film, but was there with his girl friend Kareena.

It certainly is a good news for film buffs.

SHAH RUKH KHAN TO UNDERGO SURGERY

SHAH RUKH KHAN TO UNDERGO SURGERY AGAIN

Seems, SRK’s injury days are here once again, remember he had to undergo a serious painful BACK surgery few years ago.

Well the news is that King Khan has once again to go under surgery scalpel, this time his shoulder. It just happened that SRK suffered a shoulder injury while shooting for Viveck Vaswani’s DULHA MIL GAYA few weeks ago.

But SRK went ahead with shooting with the help of his physiotherapist friend Dr. Ali Irani and even instead of taking rest, flew off to Los Angeles for a month long shooting stint for his close friend’s Karan Johar film “MY NAME IS KHAN”. The freezing cold weather of LA aggravated his injury, as a result, he had to go for MRI, which showed a tear in Left Shoulder. After consulting with several Doctors, it has been decided that SRK has to undergo a shoulder surgery.
All the best King Khan and do take care.

Another highlight of that Star Studded STAR SCREEN AWARD Nite was the refusal to accept “THE MOST POPULAR ACTOR” Award by Akshay Kumar.

Akki threw a shock and surprise to his wife and the audience by saying that he recently saw GHAJINI during his promotional visit of CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA in NEW YORK. According to him he was greatly floored and impressed by AAMIR KHAN’S hard work and performance. Then on his return to India from London, Akshay saw his own film “SINGH IS KINNG” during the flight and found that his film stood nowhere in comparison to GHAJINI.

Akshay was emotional during his speech and said that he had waited for long to get this award, but he thinks that AAMIR deserves this award more than him and requested Aamir to accept this award as a symbol of love that his fans have shown towards him. Thus Akshay left the stage leaving the award momento on the podium to everyone’s shock.

During the recent "Star Screen Awards" function Nite, there was a showdown between the compere Sajid Khan and Producer Dircetor Ashutosh Gowariker.

We all are used to Sajid Khan’s audacious remarks, which sometimes cross the barriers. Well this time, during the awards function, Sajid’s funny remarks aggravated so much that, Ashutosh Gowariker who came on to the stage to collect Best Director’s award finally could not resist and gave a good scolding to Sajid.

What disturbed Ashutosh was that Sajid was not giving much time to the award winner Technicians to voice their acceptance speech and hurried them off from the stage.

Ashustosh was so much disturbed that he even remarked “SHUT UP” to Sajid, at which Sajid said that “ Nobody’s father can shut me off”.

Hope this incident calms down Sajid for his forthcoming compering jobs.

AAMIR KHAN – SHOOTING FOR HIS NEXT “ 3 IDIOTS”

After the blockbuster success of GHAJINI, Aamir instead of resting on his laurels has gone ahead for the shooting of his next film “ 3 IDIOTS” to be directed by Raj Kumar Hirani. The much awaited film stars AAMIR, SHARMAN JOSHI, MADHAVAN, KAREENA KAPOOR and is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel.

Around 2 weeks back, the film unit got permission to shoot inside IIM Bangalore campus with the recommendation of Industrialist Mukesh Ambani.

So Aamir the perfectionist is living the student life. Being a thorough professional, he even decided to skip the GHAJINI success party, which happened on Jan. 12 evening. But after much persuasion and insistence from Producer Madhu Mantena, Aamir finally arrived for the party and during his short visit to Mumbai, he also clubbed the birthday of Imran Khan, which fell on Jan. 13.

John Abraham & Katrina Kaif, who stars in the film, one night went alongwith their director Kabir Khan to a swanky Night Club in New Yor. But they got the shock of their life when the bouncers of the club denied them entry to the club, since they had no Identification Proof.

They all tried to convince the bouncers of their Star Status, but were embarrased, when the bouncers paid no heed to their requests. Finally they had to rush back to their hotels to get their ID Proofs and when they finally got the entry the party was almost over, which was thrown by one of their crew members to celebrate his birthday.

‘ FINALS, which took place near GATEWAY OF INDIA,Mumbai.

Akshay who was the chief guest when came to the stage was very low and humble and spoke that he is a failure in the form of CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, but he also promised that he will come back again with his hard work and dedication.

CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA (CC2C) has been rejected by one and all and has been termed as a SUPER FLOP, even worse than “DRONA, TASHAN & LOVE STORY 2050”.

We all have heard the recent remark by SHEKHAR SUMAN asking Akshay to refund his ticket money and adding that CC2C is the worst movie of Indian Film Industry.

Experts and Trade Analysts have also thrashed Akki’s CC2C, saying that if Akshay goes on to do such Crap, his career will over soon.

I myself being a great fan of Akshay wish him all the best and I am very sure that our Khiladi will strike back with vengeance.

AKSHAY ADOPTS 6 WRESTLERS

The latest from our dear Akki front uis that he has decided to adopt 6 Wrestlers from economically poor background in order to promote this sports.

Well last year when Akshay attended "All India Wrestling Championship", he promised to adopt some wrestlers so as to encourage and promote the sports. So King Akki went ahead and kept his promise just a couple of days before when this "All India Wrestling Championship" starts on Feb. 01 at Andheri Sports Complex, Mumbai, says Sanjay Nirupam, spokesman from Congress party and organiser of event.

According to him, Akshay has adopted 6 wrestlers - Ajay Yadav, Amol Patil, Bipin Varma, Kallu Yadav, Gopal Yadav, and Ranjeet Nalawade, in a way that he will help them in sponsoring their diet for 5 years, which is a critical factor in ensuring the success in this sports.

HRITHIK ROSHAN

HRITHIK ROSHAN : HURTS HIMSELF ON SETS OF KITES

Hrithik has once again got injured himself and the latest is that during the shooting of his favourite project "KITES", Roshan Boy hurt his arm while enacting an action sequence during the film's shooting at Filmistan Studios.

While breaking a glass with a rod, one of the pieces struck him, althoug the sources say that it's a minor injury.

Injuries are not new to Hrithik, since earlier also, he hurt himslef during the shooting of KITES, DHOOM 2 & KRRISH.

JOHN ABRAHAM - HOOK YA CROOK

HOOK YA CROOK - JOHN HURTS HIS LEG

JOHN ABRAHAM, while shooting for David Dhawan's film "HOOK YA CROOK" has hurt his leg badly. John had to slide down a 20 feet long pole but unfortunately he landed directly on his leg. But Inspite of the injury John Bravo immediately got himself first-aid and re-shot the action sequence and got it right this time. Hats off to John for his professionalism.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE : GREAT OPENING IN INDIA

Winner of FOUR GOLDNE GLOBE awards and TEN OSCARS nominations, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, a film by British Director Danny Boyle, which narrates the rags to riches story of a Mumbai Slum Boy, has been well accepted by Indian audiences and has got a fantastic opening, when the film released in India on Jan. 23.

The film has already collected six million pounds at the UK box office and 40 million dollars in USA.Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star studio which has distributed the film in India says that the film which released in Hindi version also is doing great business in Small Towns.

The film has been liked by critics who have given high ratings to it.

REVIEW : RAAZ – THE MYSTERY CONTINUES

VISHESH Films (Mahesh & Mukesh Bhatt) are back again after seven years to recreate the success of their Super Hit Thriller RAAZ starring Bipasha Basu. Though their new film is not a sequel, but the ingredients are same as the earlier RAAZ, same spooky affair, scary moments, chill factor, good music etc.

The Story is about a successful psychic Painter Prithvi (Emraan Hashmi), who paints death on his canvas. He begins having disturbing visions and one of his paintings shows a woman whose life is in danger. He becomes disturbed and manages to trace down the lady Nandita (Kangana Ranaut). When he warns her about her death Nandita refuse to buy her theory, but when she starts facing the incidents shown in the paintings, she has no options left but to believe Prithvi. And when her death is predicted in one of his paintings, she gears up and starts her journey to unravel the scary mystery with his help, which also forces her to stay away from her boyfriend Yash (Adhyayan Suman).

What happens next and What is the secret ???? For this you better watch the movie..

Director Mohit Suri has once again done a wonderful job and has rightly built up the atmosphere and horror which is the most important factor in this genre. He is ably backed-up by well written script, tight screenplay, perfect casting, gripping cinematography, some fine performances and good music. What else you need in a movie ?

About performances, Emraan has once again come up with a brilliant performance, he really is unpredictable and is well matched-up by equally competitive Kangana Raut. Newcomer Adhyayan surprisingly has shown a strong potential and is confident. Jackie in a small role is okay.

Overall, this ghost story is upto the expectations with all the scary moment, chills and thrills. The first half starts off well with even more interesting 2nd half, though the climax could have been a far better and is less convincing. The pace of the movie is perfect for a horror genre. Some scenes are worth mentioning as – Kangana transformation into abusive man, ATM & Bath tub sequence, Bulls attacking Kangana & Emraan etc. are superb.

To sum up, the movie is worth a watch and will turn out to be a winner for Bhatts at the Box office. Go and enjoy the long weekend.

REVIEW : CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA

So here comes the first biggie of the New Year 2009, much awaited CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA (CC2C). Akshay Kumar during all his promotional visits has rightly urged his fans to leave their brains at home while watching his movie.

Rightly said Akshay, although you have once again give your best in the film, but director Nikhil Advani and story writers lets us down. In trying to make a Masala film, he has ended up in making a mess or I will say KHICHDI, with no taste. Although the film has everything right from comedy to action to drama, but when I came out of the theatre, I was not satisfied, something was missing, which I felt in Akshay’s last film SINGH IS KINNG also, that’s an another story that it was a big hit.

Coming on to story, film is all about Sidhu (Akshay Kumar) who makes his earnings by cutting vegetables in a Dhaba based in Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. He instead of working hard believes in short cuts, roadside astrologers, which becomes a worry for his Dada (Mithun Chakraborty), who is like a father to him.

A twist in Film takes him to China, where he lands up in a village run by brutal smuggler Hojo [Gordon Liu]. On his way he meets Sakhi (Deepika Padukone), who is going to China to pay homage her dead father, and also meet her twin Meow (Deepika in Double Role). Again the story leads to Hojo killing Dada and now we are left up to watch Akshay taking revenge with Hojo, usual Bollywood style. He learns us Kung Fu and Martial arts with some thrilling training sequences in the 2nd half of the film. Also, sequences of GREAT WALL OF CHINA are well captured.

As far as action is considered, kids may like the martial arts, but the problem is that they have been so much brought up on Jackie Chan movies that the action in CC2C may not excite them. Also we are also so used to Akshay sense of comedy and his comic expressions that even in serious scenes, we can’t stop laughing. Moreover, humour in action sequences spoils the fun and thrill.

The music of the film is disappointing with no soft hummable song in it. As far as direction is considered, Nikhil Advani has miserable failed us after his good show in Kal Ho Na Ho and Salaam-E-Ishq. He had everything with him to show to audience, Akshay’s comedy, Kung Fu action, big banner, but somehow fails to do justice and ends up in a mess. The story and script is pathetic and senseless.

Hats off to Akshay to carry the film on his shoulders all alone. The film will surely take a big opening courtesy Akshay, lets see how it fares in the weeks to follow.

Deepika has done justice to her roles, Mithun & Ranvir are wasted in the film.

It’s a big surprise how Gordon Liu agreed to do this film, may be due to Warner Bros, who has for the first time taken a dip in a Bollywood Production.

Overall, despite all the big names behind him, i.e. Akshay, Warner Bros, Ramesh Sippy, Gordon Liu etc., Nikhil Advani has served a terrible Chinese cum Bollywood Masala, which is not upto the expectations.

Let’s wish that film does well and relieves pressure on Akshay’s shoulders, which were burdened by the success of SRK’s RAB NE BAN DI JODI & Aaamir’s GHAJINI.

Earlier in one of my blogs, I have mentioned about the US VISA problems, young actor Aamir Bashir (A WEDNESDAY) had to face post Mumbai Terror attacks. It was like Aaamir Bashir was denied US VISA, which he applied for, so that he may be available for KARAN JOHAR’s forthcoming film “MY NAME IS KHAN” starring SHAH RUKH KHAN & KAJOL. Aaamir Bashir was to play SRK’s younger brother.

Unfortunately for Aamir, he has now been replaced with JIMMY SHERGILL, who is heading off to Los Angeles on January 20 to attend the shoot of the film. One’s gain is other’s loss.

The latest is that John Abraham is learning to play cricket for his new film HOOK YA CROOK, to be directed by Hit Machine David Dhawan. And he is taking the coaching from Dinesh Lad, who is the coach of Indian Cricketer Rohit Sharma.

David has confirmed the news, who seems to be quite excited about his film, which is a thriller and based on Cricket. The film is to take on floors from Jan. 10.

It seems that finally another lovey dovey couple has broken up their bond after Shahid Kareena. Well, we are talking about the Priyanka Chopra and Harman S Baweja, who have split up.

As per the sources, it is confirmed, even the copule were not together on the New Year, Priyanka was in Manali with her famoly while Harman stayed with his friends.
Incidentally, both are currently shooting for Ashutosh Gowariker’s new film “WHAT’S YOUR RASHEE ?”. Inspite of the break-up, both have chosen to remain as good friends.

One of the major reasons for their split may be the way their careers are heading, Priyanka is going great guns after her hit films – FASHION & DOSTANA, whereas Harman’s career is still to flourish, he is hoping high on VICTORY, a film based on Cricket.

Imran Khan of JAANE TU YA JAANE NA fame, has come out with a novel way of extending THANK YOU gesture to his Mama Aamir Khan, who has gone full swing in promoting Imran Khan for his debut film.
Imran Khan has not charged a single penny for Aamir Khan’s forthcoming home production DELHI BELLY. Well done Imran for this wonderful gesture.

After the recent hits from YASH RAJ FILM’s banner – BACHNA AE HASEENO & RAB NE BANA DI JODI, which incidentally had the sequences of GOLDEN TEMPLE, Amritsar, it seems that YRF has decided to feature Golden Temple (their Lucky Mascot) in all of their future films.

It makes sense since both these films had come out winner after the series of FLOP films from YRF Banner.

Moreover since both the Khan’s recent movies - RAB NE BANA DI JODI & GHAJINI have been hits, onus is more on Akshay that his film becomes superhit. And he is leaving no stone unturned.

Well, the latest is that Akshay Kumar has hired an Aircraft to personally attend the International premieres of CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, which is planned in LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK, TORONTA, DUBAI, LONDON, BANGKOK & NEW DELHI, starting from Jan. 7 onwards. With him, his wife Twinkle, Deepika Padukone and Director Nikhil Advani will be accompanying.

Recently shooting of Rakesh Roshan’s KITES starring Hrithik Roshan and Kangana Ranaut had to be stopped midway at Filmistan Studios in Mumbai. Reason being, some 30 odd foreign dancers who were shooting for a song episode did not have a proper work permit, as a result, they hAd to leave the sets immediately. However, Rakesh Roshan managed to continue the shoot after a couple of hours with the help of Indian Dancers and few Foreign Dancers with prooer work permit.

The film will be directed by Anurag Basu and also stars Barabar Mori, a Mexican actress, who seems to have shared some sizzling scenes with Hrithik Roashan in KITES.

Taking cue from the recent Mumbai Terror attacks, Produce Director B. SUBHASH of “DISCO DANCER, TARZAN, DANCE DANCE” fame has already announced his film “TAJ TERROR”.
He is planning to cast his hot favourite Mithun Chakraborty as NSG Chief JK Dutt, John Abraham as a Commando, Shah Rukh Khan as Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Emraan Hashmi as terrorist Kasab.

Hope he does justice to the sensitive subject.
